At Bevington, we follow our school phonics programme which has been written by our staff and is based on ‘Letters and Sounds’ but tailored to ensure our pupils progress rapidly and that their learning is embedded.
Pupils in Early Years and Key Stage One (pupils in EYFS to Year 2) are taught phonics daily for at least 20 minutes. Children are taught phonics progressing from phase 1 in Nursery, to phase 6 at the end of Year 2.
Our phonics lessons are very active, fast-paced and involve lots of different activities to help the children learn their letters and sounds.
Phonics and Reading
It is important that children are reading ‘decodable’ books that match their phonics learning. We also encourage reading for pleasure, and teach wider comprehension through a variety of ways. This includes using Guided, Shared, Modelled, Buddy and Home Reading across our school day and curriculum.
Reading enhances learning in all subjects, and by far the most important part of our curriculum.
