We celebrate a range of different music through our curriculum and we teach children to consolidate their skills in performing, composing, listening and appraising. Music is taught by specialist music teacher from the Tri-Borough Music Hub.
We have a specialist music room, which is located on the top floor and is well-stocked with a wide range of instruments. We teach a range of different music through our curriculum and we encourage our pupils to consolidate their skills in performing, composing, listening and appraising. Through our curriculum, pupils are taught to sing and perform solo or in group ensemble contexts building on the skills each year from Nursery to Year 6. We also encourage staff to use music at different parts of the day (such as singing to enhance another curriculum subject, celebrate an occasion, or mark a routine).
Each week, we celebrate our love of music and singing through a ‘Singing Assembly’, which takes place in phase groups.
Extra-curricular music is provided through instrumental lessons and clubs such as choir, and we take part in regular events at prestigious London venues.
Twice a year we have a music recital, which celebrates and acknowledges the determination and talent of our pupils.
Subject Overview
Please find the subject overview for Music at Bevington below. This map details the skills and knowledge pupils are taught in each year through the school.
Choirs
At Bevington there are two choirs to support pupils who love to sing.
The Bevington School of Pop is a 60-strong choir which rehearses weekly.
We learn a range of music from choir classics to arrangements of popular tunes. Each year, the School of Pop performs at the O2 Arena in London as part of Young Voices.
We also have an auditioned Chamber Choir which is made up of talented singers across key stage 2. Singers in the Chamber Choir have performed at prestigious venues such as the V&A Museum and Foundling Museum.
For children and parents of choir members, please click below to access our portal of videos and backing tracks to support learning the songs for upcoming concerts.
Orchestra
The Bevington School Orchestra is an auditioned ensemble of musicians which rehearses weekly. We learn a range of music from classical pieces to arrangements of popular tunes. Any KS2 children, who are already learning an instrument, are welcome to audition. We perform on our own as part in regular concerts and recitals, and in conjunction with the School of Pop and Chamber Choir.
Samba Band
Our Samba Band comprises talented drummers and percussionists. We rehearse weekly and learn a variety of authentic Brazilian samba pieces. Children learn a range of instruments from our collection, including Surdo (large drum), Ganza (shaker), Tamborim (small drum) and Caixa (snare). Pupils perform in concerts and at outdoor events, such as the Summer Fair.
Instrumental Lessons
We currently offer weekly instrumental lessons in Piano, Guitar, Ukulele, Saxophone and Drums; we are also able to offer string and wind instruments upon request. These take place on either an individual or group basis, and are taught by experienced professional musicians. We are able to offer targeted places for parents who feel unable to make a financial contribution, as we strongly feel that access to quality musical education should be available to all. All pupils who receive instrumental lessons are offered places in our school ensembles, and talented instrumentalists will be offered solo or recital opportunities through the year.
