How Children Learn:
At Bevington Primary School, our curriculum comes to life in the classroom through a carefully sequenced and consistent approach. Teachers are supported with comprehensive planning documents for every unit, written by experienced subject leaders. These ensure that all staff have a strong foundation of subject knowledge, helping to reduce planning workload and allowing teachers to focus on how to deliver lessons that meet the needs of their pupils.
Every lesson begins with a review of prior knowledge, helping pupils to recall what they’ve previously learned and link it to new ideas. A key focus of each lesson is on vocabulary development: teachers introduce and explore new terms at the outset – often unpicking the roots and origins of words – and revisit them throughout the session in meaningful contexts. Children are given opportunities to use and embed this vocabulary in their spoken and written work. Teachers draw on well-established, evidence-informed teaching strategies – including those outlined by Rosenshine – to break learning into manageable steps, explain concepts clearly, model thinking aloud, and provide opportunities for structured talk, independent practice and deep questioning.
Assessment is woven into our lessons: teachers continually check understanding through questioning, written work, oral responses, low-stakes quizzing and the use of Knowledge Organisers. This ongoing monitoring allows for immediate feedback and responsive teaching, ensuring misconceptions are addressed and learning is secure.
Working Walls
Every classroom at Bevington features a dynamic working wall that reflects the current unit of study. These displays evolve over time, providing children with a visible reference for key learning, vocabulary, and strategies. They serve as an important scaffold, supporting children to revisit, consolidate and extend their knowledge throughout the unit.
Knowledge Organisers
Our Knowledge Organisers and Curriculum Overviews for each year group below can be accessed below. They summarise the essential knowledge, vocabulary and concepts children need to understand within a given topic.

Curriculum Enrichment
To deepen pupils’ understanding and bring their learning to life, each year group also takes part in curriculum-linked enrichment such as educational visits, workshops, and hands-on experiences. These opportunities give pupils a chance to make meaningful connections between what they’re learning and the world beyond the classroom. Whether it’s a museum trip to launch a History unit or a workshop to complement a Science topic, these experiences inspire curiosity and enhance pupils’ understanding of the world around them.
