Bevington Primary School

PSHE

Intent

At Bevington Primary School, our PSHE curriculum provides pupils with the knowledge, understanding, skills and strategies they need to succeed in life and become thoughtful, responsible and safe individuals. It supports the development of the whole child, empowering them to make informed decisions, maintain their wellbeing, and build strong, respectful relationships.

The curriculum is rooted in our school values of aspiration, respect, and perseverance. These values guide pupils in how they treat themselves and others, how they approach challenges, and how they contribute to their communities.

Our aims are to ensure pupils:

  • Develop the knowledge and confidence to stay safe and healthy
  • Build and maintain positive relationships grounded in mutual respect
  • Understand their role as active citizens, locally and globally
  • Appreciate difference and promote equality
  • Know how to ask for help when they need it

Implementation

PSHE is taught weekly in all year groups, with lessons based on the SCARF (Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship) programme and supported by materials from the PSHE Association. It is structured across three core strands:

  • Health Education
  • Relationship Education
  • Wider PSHE, including citizenship and economic understanding

Learning is further reinforced through phase assemblies, circle times, and cross-curricular links. For example:

  • Online safety in Computing
  • Puberty and changes in the human body in Science
  • Teamwork and empathy in PE

Safeguarding is embedded throughout the curriculum. Pupils are taught how to recognise unsafe situations, how to set and respect boundaries, and how to access support.

A vital part of our provision is Relationship and Sex Education (RSE), which is taught in a gradual, age-appropriate sequence:

  • EYFS – Recognising growth and change since being a baby
  • KS1 – Naming body parts, understanding privacy, asking for permission, recognising appropriate and inappropriate contact
  • LKS2 – Exploring personal boundaries and consent
  • UKS2 – Understanding the emotional and physical changes of puberty, menstruation, and safe, respectful relationships

The 2020 statutory guidance on Relationship and Health Education is fully met. Parents may withdraw their child from the non-statutory aspects of Sex Education, and we welcome conversations with families before any decisions are made. Alternative, appropriate provision is arranged for withdrawn pupils.

Impact

We evaluate the impact of our PSHE curriculum through lesson monitoring, pupil voice, and ongoing formative assessment. Teachers assess how well pupils apply what they’ve learned in real-life situations, their relationships with others, and their personal confidence and resilience.

By the end of Year 6, pupils:

  • Can make informed choices about their health, safety, and wellbeing
  • Demonstrate kindness, respect and empathy towards others
  • Speak confidently about relationships, emotions, and changes to their bodies
  • Know how to stay safe both in person and online
  • Are ready for the challenges of secondary school and modern life

Our PSHE curriculum ensures that pupils leave Bevington with the emotional intelligence, social awareness and strength of character to pursue their aspirations, treat others with respect, and persevere through life’s challenges.
