Bevington Primary School

Physical Education

Intent

Our Physical Education (PE) curriculum at Bevington Primary School is designed to promote lifelong health, confidence, and a love of movement. Grounded in our school values of aspiration, respect and perseverance, it provides a holistic and inclusive programme tailored to the needs of our diverse school community.

We aim for all pupils to:

  • Build core physical competencies including balance, agility, coordination and strength
  • Develop personal confidence, resilience and emotional well-being through physical challenge
  • Understand the importance of fitness, health and an active lifestyle
  • Experience the joy of movement through a wide range of physical activities and sports
  • Learn to work collaboratively, showing leadership, respect and fair play

From Yoga and African dance to Football, Gymnastics and Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA), our curriculum reflects cultural diversity and broadens horizons while ensuring progression of skills across all year groups.

Implementation

PE is delivered twice weekly to all pupils from Nursery through to Year 6:

  • One hour per week is taught by a Specialist PE teacher, ensuring expert instruction, modelling and progression
  • One hour per week is led by the Class Teacher, using the same structured and inclusive planning to reinforce and extend learning

We follow the Get Set 4 PE scheme, which provides a consistent and developmental sequence of lessons across all strands of PE. Key features of our implementation include:

  • Fundamental movement skills developed in EYFS and built upon throughout Key Stages 1 and 2
  • A wide variety of sport-specific units, such as Hockey, Tennis, Gymnastics, Tag Rugby and Netball
  • Dance units that celebrate global cultures and traditions, including African drumming, Indian classical dance and Capoeira
  • Swimming lessons for Years 5 and 6 at a local leisure centre, ensuring statutory swimming and water safety requirements are met
  • Outdoor learning opportunities, such as orienteering and team-building tasks in local parks
  • Cross-curricular links, for example, connecting fitness to Science or resilience in team games to PSHE
  • Fully inclusive provision, with adapted tasks, equipment and support to meet the needs of all learners, including pupils with SEND

Children also benefit from enrichment opportunities such as Sports Day, inter-school competitions and extra-curricular sports clubs.

Impact

Assessment in PE is both formative and summative, with teachers and the specialist PE lead tracking pupil progress against clear learning objectives. Each unit includes skill checkpoints and opportunities for pupils to reflect, improve and challenge themselves.

By the end of Year 6, pupils are:

  • Physically confident and skilled across a broad range of movement and sporting activities
  • Resilient and able to work well in teams, showing sportsmanship and mutual respect
  • Aware of how physical activity supports physical and mental health and well-being
  • Equipped with the knowledge and motivation to lead an active lifestyle beyond primary school

Our PE curriculum empowers pupils to thrive physically, socially and emotionally. Through consistent, high-quality teaching and a diverse range of activities, we ensure that all pupils leave Bevington with the skills, confidence and habits needed to live healthy and fulfilling lives.
