Bevington Primary School

Spanish

Intent

At Bevington Primary School, we believe learning a foreign language is essential to a broad and balanced curriculum. From Year 3 onwards, all pupils are taught Spanish by a specialist teacher who brings expertise and enthusiasm to each lesson. We aim to foster a love of language learning while equipping pupils with the linguistic skills and cultural awareness they need to thrive in an increasingly global society.

Our curriculum is designed to:

  • Build progressively on language knowledge, vocabulary and grammar across Key Stage 2
  • Enable pupils to communicate with increasing confidence in spoken and written Spanish
  • Encourage curiosity about the world and deepen understanding of different cultures, particularly those of Spanish-speaking countries
  • Ensure pupils leave Year 6 with a secure foundation in Spanish, ready to build on their learning in secondary school

Implementation

Our specialist Modern Foreign Languages teacher teaches Spanish weekly from Year 3 to Year 6. Lessons are based on a well-sequenced scheme that is both ambitious and accessible, drawing on resources such as the BBC Languages Scheme and the Español, Español programme. Each unit is carefully structured to revisit key vocabulary and grammatical structures while introducing new concepts clearly and engagingly.

Teaching combines:

  • Interactive songs, games and stories to build vocabulary and pronunciation
  • Oral repetition, paired dialogue, and role play to develop speaking and listening skills
  • Explicit phonics teaching to support accurate pronunciation
  • Regular reading and writing tasks to embed understanding
  • Links to other curriculum areas such as Geography, Music and History to deepen contextual knowledge

Each year, the group has clear end-of-year objectives, ensuring progression in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar. The curriculum is scaffolded so pupils can gradually move from using simple words and phrases to forming more complex sentences with greater independence and accuracy.

Impact

Pupils at Bevington develop a strong grasp of key Spanish vocabulary and structures and enjoy the opportunity to express themselves in a new language. Regular assessment, including listening tasks, speaking opportunities, and written work, ensures that learning is embedded and misconceptions are addressed swiftly.

By the end of Year 6, pupils can:

  • Engage in short conversations with appropriate pronunciation and intonation
  • Read and understand short passages of written Spanish
  • Write sentences using key grammatical structures
  • Understand and use vocabulary linked to familiar themes such as food, family, weather and travel
  • Make connections between Spanish and English, developing metalinguistic awareness

Our pupils leave Bevington as confident language learners with a solid foundation in Spanish and a readiness to embrace further language learning at secondary school.
