What Children Learn:
At Bevington Primary School, our curriculum is proudly knowledge-rich. We believe that every child, whatever their background or starting point, deserves access to the foundational knowledge and cultural experiences that open doors to future learning and opportunity. Our curriculum is broad, ambitious and carefully planned to provide all pupils, including those with SEND and those receiving the Pupil Premium, with the tools they need to succeed.
Rooted in the National Curriculum and enriched with thoughtful additions, our curriculum provides a deep and meaningful educational journey from the Early Years to Year 6. In Early Years, pupils build their understanding of the world by focusing on language, number, and early literacy. This foundation is developed and expanded as pupils move through the school, each year building on what has come before.
A Curriculum Designed for Depth and Coherence
Our curriculum is shaped by a clear understanding of how children learn best. Drawing on research into cognitive science, memory and the psychology of learning, we ensure that learning is thoughtfully sequenced and delivered in a way that helps pupils retain and apply what they have been taught.
Pupils revisit key ideas regularly, connect new learning to prior knowledge, and have frequent opportunities to practise and apply their understanding meaningfully. Techniques such as spaced retrieval, low-stakes quizzing and deliberate practice are embedded to help children remember more over time. These approaches ensure that knowledge is not simply encountered—it is secured and used with confidence.
We teach each subject discretely, respecting its unique identity. Whether studying History, Science, Geography or Art, pupils are introduced to subject-specific vocabulary, skills and ways of thinking. This enables them to develop a deep understanding of each discipline while also making connections where appropriate. Local content—including the history and geography of the surrounding area—is woven into the curriculum to strengthen pupils' sense of place and identity.
Our Approach to Curriculum Design
At Bevington, we believe that a high-quality education starts with clarity about what we teach and why. Our knowledge-rich curriculum is shaped to ensure that essential ideas, concepts, and content are introduced thoughtfully, revisited, and built upon over time.
Each subject—whether History, Science, Geography or Art—has been carefully planned so pupils gradually develop their understanding and make meaningful connections between what they have learned. This allows knowledge to become secure and, ultimately, useful.
Rather than covering content superficially, we take the time to explore key ideas in depth, and give children regular opportunities to practise, recall and apply what they know. This supports long-term retention and helps pupils develop confidence and independence as learners.
By approaching the curriculum in this way, we ensure that children are not just exposed to knowledge, but that they remember it, use it, and see its value—now and in the future.
Why Teach Knowledge?
We believe that a knowledge-rich education is transformative. It helps children understand the world, articulate their ideas, and engage critically with the complexities of life. A carefully sequenced and inclusive curriculum makes a lasting difference for children who may not access specific cultural or academic experiences outside of school.
Through this approach, our pupils explore significant historical events and figures, grapple with philosophical questions, engage in scientific enquiry, and immerse themselves in literature, music and the arts. Every curriculum element fits within a larger framework of progression, purpose and opportunity.
We are proud to provide this foundation—a curriculum that raises aspiration, closes gaps, and prepares every child to become a confident, curious and well-educated future citizen.

Curriculum Information and Documentation
To explore our curriculum in more detail, the following documents are available:
- Whole School Curriculum Overview
A year-by-year summary of the units taught across all subjects. - Subject Curriculum Maps
Detailed breakdowns of what is taught in each subject are available under each subject area on our website. - Subject Rationales
These explain the principles and decision-making that underpin our curriculum design in each subject. - Unit Rationales
In subjects such as Art, History, Geography and Science, we explain the key knowledge, concepts and disciplinary understanding developed in each unit—and how each fits into the wider curriculum structure. - Knowledge and Assessment Goals
Each lesson is built around specific Knowledge Goals that outline what children are expected to learn. Assessment Goals identify what should be securely retained and understood by the end of each unit.
These documents reflect our belief that every child has the right to an excellent education—one that is rich in knowledge, thoughtful in design and ambitious in outcome.
